If you go on holiday in Rhodes, you should definitely visit the picturesque island of Symi with a daily cruise, which is 24 nautical miles northwest of Rhodes. In the bow of the boat blows the Aegean breeze, but you feel calm as soon as the boat enters the port of the island. We start at 9 o’clock in the morning from the tourist harbor of Rhodes with “SYMI II” of the Sea Dreams, for a day trip, which one would simply call “the journey of the senses”. First stop of the daily cruise to Symi is Gialos, from here we can reach from the main staircase Kali Strata, also the charming upper town “Chora”. Be enchanted by the Princess of the Dodecanese and then immerse yourself in the architecture, the picturesque ambience and the incomparable tradition.
We walk first in Gialos, where the clock tower stands and directly opposite there is the imposing belfry of the Evangelistria church. Next, to it, the police building is reminiscent of Italian-era architecture. A little further on is the “Dove of Peace” by the Symiot sculptor Kostas Valsamis and the monument for the signing of the surrender of the Dodecanese on May 8, 1945, by the Germans to the Allies. And in the center of Yialos stands the statue of the little fisherman “Michalakis”.
Fishing boats, caiques, and sponge shops confirm with the scent of the sea breeze that you are on a Greek island. But at the same time sailboats and expensive yachts let feel the luxury. Small shops selling folk art and traditional products, taverns, cafes, and bakeries, are hidden in the picturesque streets, waiting to be discovered. The aromas from the spices, especially the oregano and the sage of Symi, are seductive and arouse all the senses. Fresh fish, octopus, calamari and a variety of seafood impress with taste and authenticity. In Symi, you will find the unique and tasty shrimps of Symi and the traditional large cheese bags. You can discover the gastronomy of Symi, through the numerous folk festivals of the island.
